Panax Ginseng

Panax ginseng is a root cultivated in Korea for centuries and a central part of traditional Korean medicine long before its use in cosmetics. The genus name Panax comes from Greek and refers to broad healing, reflecting its wide historical use. Cosmetic extracts are standardized for ginsenosides, steroid-like compounds considered responsible for much of its biological activity.

Ginsenosides have documented antioxidant activity and neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental stress. Research on ginseng extract also suggests support for fibroblast activity, the cells that produce collagen and elastin, and improved skin microcirculation. American ginseng, Panax quinquefolius, is related but different, while Siberian ginseng, Eleutherococcus senticosus, does not belong to the Panax genus.
