Hyaluronic Acid

Sodium HyaluronateHAHydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid

A humectant also produced naturally by the skin, available in several molecular weights to hydrate at different levels at the same time.

Definition

What is it?

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide, a long chain of sugar molecules, naturally found throughout the body. Roughly half of the body's total amount is found in the skin, between cells in the dermis, where it retains water. Today, cosmetic hyaluronic acid is produced by bacterial fermentation rather than animal sources. Older extraction methods, such as from rooster combs, have been almost completely removed from modern supply chains.

Most products list sodium hyaluronate, the salt form of hyaluronic acid. It is smaller and more stable than pure hyaluronic acid, which is why formulators often prefer it. It remains stable in a formula and can reach the skin's upper layers more easily.

How it works

How does it work?

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it binds and retains water in the surface layers of the skin. Its effect depends on molecular size, concentration and the complete formula.

High-molecular-weight HA stays mainly on the surface, where it creates a hydrating film and softens the feeling of tightness. Lower-molecular-weight forms can reach the upper layers of the epidermis more easily and complement hydration.

Multi-molecular formulas combine several sizes of hyaluronic acid for immediate surface hydration and more sustained moisture support.

Benefits

What does Hyaluronic Acid actually do for the skin?

  • 01Plumps and softens the appearance of fine dehydration lines within minutes of application
  • 02Hydrates at more than one level when several molecular weights are combined
  • 03Adds water without oil, giving it a lightweight profile for most skin types without heaviness
  • 04Prepares the surface so later serums and creams spread and absorb more evenly
  • 05Suitable for almost every skin type, including acne-prone and reactive skin
  • 06Reduces the feeling of tightness or dryness during the day, especially in heated or air-conditioned environments

Who is it for?

Is it right for your skin?

For dehydrated skin of every type, including oily skin, because dehydration is a lack of water, not a lack of oil. Oily skin can be just as dehydrated as dry skin. It has a very low irritation risk and is a safe choice for people building their first routine.

Notes and myths

What should you know before using it?

Hyaluronic acid works best within a formula that also contains emollient or occlusive ingredients, which slow water loss. In routines using a lightweight serum, follow with moisturizer to keep skin soft throughout the day.

Despite its name, hyaluronic acid does not exfoliate or alter pH the way glycolic or salicylic acid does. It is a hydrator, not an exfoliant.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Hyaluronic Acid

Does hyaluronic acid replace moisturizer?+

No. Hyaluronic acid binds water, while moisturizer also contains lipids or occlusive ingredients that help keep moisture in the skin. Using them together provides more complete hydration.

Is hyaluronic acid an exfoliant?+

No, despite the name. It is a water-binding humectant and does not remove dead skin cells like AHAs or BHAs.
