Centella Asiatica
A botanical extract rich in madecassoside and triterpenes, used to calm redness and support the skin barrier.
Definition
What is it?
Centella Asiatica, also known as Gotu Kola, is a creeping plant that grows in humid parts of Asia. It has a long history in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for wound care, long before its use in cosmetics. Cica, now an entire marketing category in Korean skincare, is simply the industry shorthand for Centella Asiatica.
Cosmetic-grade extracts are usually standardized around four active triterpenoids: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid. The concentration and ratio of these four compounds determine the real performance of a Cica product. The word Cica alone on a label does not guarantee a particular strength.
How it works
How does it work?
Key Centella Asiatica compounds such as asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid support natural renewal processes and help calm signals associated with irritation.
Madecassoside and other triterpenes contribute to a calmer-looking complexion and support barrier function. The effect varies depending on the extract type, standardization and concentration in the formula.

Notes and myths
What should you know before using it?
Cica is a marketing term, not a single ingredient with a fixed strength. Always check the INCI list for Centella Asiatica Extract or triterpenoid names such as asiaticoside and madecassoside to understand whether the formula contains meaningful amounts or is simply using the familiar label.
Centella soothes and supports repair, but it does not replace daily sun protection or barrier-care basics such as gentle cleansing and a ceramide moisturizer. Think of it as a recovery-support ingredient, not a complete routine on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about Centella Asiatica
Is Centella Asiatica the same as Cica?+
Yes. Cica is simply the industry name for Centella Asiatica. Check the ingredient list for the extract or its triterpenoids, such as asiaticoside and madecassoside, to better assess the actual concentration.
Can I use it on irritated or breakout-prone skin?+
It is one of the better-tolerated actives for skin with a compromised barrier. If the skin is cracked, has open wounds or has just undergone a procedure, consult a dermatologist about the appropriate time to use it.
