Beta-Glucan
A polysaccharide usually derived from oats or yeast that soothes irritation and supports the skin barrier without the stickiness of heavier humectants.
Definition
What is it?
Beta-glucan is a long-chain polysaccharide found in the cell walls of oats, yeast, mushrooms and some grains. Cosmetic-grade beta-glucan is usually derived from oats or baker's yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and purified for topical use. This differs from beta-glucan used in oral immune-support supplements.
How it works
How does it work?
Beta-glucan creates a lightweight film that helps retain moisture and soften the skin surface without heaviness. Its polysaccharides support the barrier and soothe visible signs of stressed skin. For this reason, it is often combined with ceramides, panthenol and other hydrating ingredients.

Notes and myths
What should you know before using it?
Oat-derived beta-glucan deserves caution in people with oat sensitivity, although true allergy is rare. Check the source in the INCI list: Avena Sativa for the oat-derived form and Saccharomyces Cerevisiae for the yeast-derived form.
