What is it?
Ceramides are a family of wax-like lipid molecules that make up roughly half of the fats in the skin's outermost layer, the stratum corneum. Together with cholesterol and free fatty acids, they form a structure often compared with bricks, the skin cells, and mortar, the lipids. Cosmetic ceramides are synthesized in a laboratory to mimic specific subtypes naturally found in human skin. On labels they appear under codes such as Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP and Ceramide EOP, each representing a distinct molecule with a specific role in this lipid layer.

How does it work?
When the skin barrier is damaged by over-exfoliation, harsh weather, aggressive cleansing or age, as natural ceramide levels decline over time, gaps form in its structure that allow water to escape and irritants to enter. Topical ceramides physically replenish this lipid matrix. Performance is best when a formula combines several ceramide types with cholesterol and fatty acids in ratios similar to healthy skin. Dermatological research suggests that this ratio matters more than ceramide concentration alone.
