Adenosine is a nucleoside, a basic compound that cells continuously use for energy transfer as part of ATP, the molecule that powers nearly every cellular process. Adenosine is thought to work in part by influencing fibroblast activity, the skin cells responsible for collagen production, while also supporting cellular energy metabolism during the skin repair cycle. Studies underpinning its Korean classification as a functional cosmetic ingredient reported measurable reductions in wrinkle depth with consistent use, although its exact mechanism has been studied less extensively than that of established actives such as retinoids.
