Glycolic Acid
A small-molecule AHA that removes dead skin cells, smooths texture and evens the appearance of skin tone when used in a controlled way.
Definition
What is it?
Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, or AHA, originally derived from sugar cane, although most cosmetic glycolic acid is now synthesized. It has the smallest molecular size within the AHA family, allowing it to penetrate the skin surface more easily than lactic acid or other AHAs. This property explains both its effectiveness and its higher irritation potential compared with gentler acids.
How it works
How does it work?
Glycolic acid loosens the bonds between dead surface cells, accelerates their shedding and reveals smoother, more even-looking skin. Because of its small molecular size, it penetrates more readily than other AHAs at the same concentration, producing more noticeable surface renewal but also a higher risk of irritation, redness and sun sensitivity when used too often or above the skin's tolerance.
Benefits
What does Glycolic Acid actually do for the skin?
- 01Renews the surface and smooths rough or uneven texture
- 02Improves dullness and uneven-looking tone with consistent, moderate use
- 03Helps clear pores and reduce visible surface buildup
- 04One of the most studied and widely used exfoliating acids in skincare
- 05May improve the application and absorption of other actives once surface dead cells are removed
Who is it for?
Is it right for your skin?
For normal to oily skin with rough texture, dullness or uneven tone that tolerates stronger exfoliation. Sensitive skin often does better starting with a gentler acid such as lactic acid or a PHA before moving to glycolic acid.
Notes and myths
What should you know before using it?
Daily SPF is essential while using glycolic acid. Exfoliated skin becomes measurably more sensitive to UV exposure, and skipping protection can cause the very hyperpigmentation this active is intended to improve. Start at a low frequency, 1-2 times per week, and build up gradually rather than using it every day from the start.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about Glycolic Acid
How often should I use glycolic acid?+
Start 1-2 times per week and increase gradually according to skin tolerance. Daily use from day one is a common cause of over-exfoliation, particularly at higher concentrations.
