Azulene
A soothing ingredient from the azulene family, known for antioxidant activity and for helping reduce the appearance of redness.
Definition
What is it?
Azulene is the name of a family of blue-toned aromatic compounds. In cosmetics, guaiazulene, a stable blue derivative, is commonly used, while chamazulene forms during the processing of German chamomile. These compounds are related, but they are not identical.
How it works
How does it work?
Guaiazulene and chamazulene show soothing and antioxidant activity. In formulas for sensitive skin, they help reduce the appearance of redness and protect against oxidative stress. The blue color may come from the ingredient itself, but the shade of the product does not indicate its concentration or potency.
Benefits
What does Azulene actually do for the skin?
- 01Soothes visible redness and inflammation
- 02Provides antioxidant protection against environmental stress
- 03Gives some formulas a characteristic blue hue without indicating their strength on its own
- 04Generally well tolerated by sensitive and reactive skin
- 05With consistent use, supports a calmer, less reactive appearance
Who is it for?
Is it right for your skin?
For sensitive, reactive or redness-prone skin when a soothing ingredient with a genuine mechanism of action is desired beyond its distinctive appearance.
Notes and myths
What should you know before using it?
Blue color should not be used as proof of azulene concentration. Check the INCI list and the complete formula, as products may use guaiazulene, chamomile extract or other colorants.
