Allantoin

Allantoin is a compound found naturally in comfrey root and, in very small amounts, in the urine of most mammals. Its name comes from the Latin word allantois. Today, nearly all cosmetic-grade allantoin is produced synthetically or derived from sugar beet rather than these natural sources, helping ensure consistency and lower cost.

It is one of the most common ingredients in Korean skincare and appears in a large share of the products in this catalog because it is inexpensive, rarely irritating and performs real, measurable functions.

Allantoin is a mild keratolytic: it loosens the bonds between dead skin cells and supports their gradual shedding without the stronger chemical action of AHAs or BHAs. It also has documented activity related to cell proliferation, supporting the rate at which new skin cells are produced. This is one reason it is frequently used in recovery and repair formulas.

It also acts as a humectant and anti-irritant, helping soften the effects of formulas containing stronger actives such as acids and retinoids by soothing the skin.

Suitable for every skin type, as it is one of the few ingredients with very few meaningful use restrictions. It is especially useful for sensitive, reactive or post-procedure skin, as well as for people using stronger actives who want a soothing ingredient in the same routine.

Because it is inexpensive and gentle, allantoin is sometimes incorrectly treated as a filler ingredient with no real function. Its soothing and renewing activity is genuine, but subtle enough that it is rarely presented as the hero active. Do not expect a visible transformation from allantoin alone, as its role is primarily supportive.
