Shea Butter

Butyrospermum Parkii Butter

A fatty-acid-rich butter pressed from the nuts of the African shea tree, valued for deep softening in creams and balms.

Definition

What is it?

Shea butter is pressed from the nuts of the shea tree, Vitellaria paradoxa, listed in INCI as Butyrospermum Parkii, which is native to West and East Africa. It has a long history of traditional cosmetic and medicinal use before its adoption in global skin and hair formulas. It is rich in oleic and stearic acids as well as vitamins A and E, giving it emollient properties and mild antioxidant activity.

How it works

How does it work?

Its fatty-acid profile makes shea butter an effective emollient and occlusive. It fills microscopic gaps between surface cells, the emollient effect, and remains on the surface to slow water loss, the occlusive effect. This combination is particularly useful in rich creams and balms for dry or very dry skin. Its vitamins add a secondary, mild antioxidant benefit alongside its main moisturizing function.

Benefits

  • 01Deeply moisturizes and softens dry or rough texture
  • 02Forms a protective layer that helps reduce water loss
  • 03Adds mild antioxidant activity from vitamins A and E
  • 04Helps soothe tightness and discomfort in very dry skin
  • 05Supports long-lasting comfort in dry skin through combined emollient and occlusive action

Who is it for?

Is it right for your skin?

For dry to very dry skin, especially in cold or low-humidity climates, and for anyone who wants a richer, more occlusive moisturizer than a lightweight essence or lotion.

Notes and myths

What should you know before using it?

Its richness is an advantage for dry skin but may feel heavy on oily or acne-prone skin and may contribute to congestion in comedone-prone areas. Patch test if you are prone to breakouts and unsure how your skin will respond.
