Honey Extract
A natural humectant with mild antibacterial activity and a documented history in wound care, strongest in raw or Manuka forms.
Definition
What is it?
Honey has a documented history of use in wound care across many ancient cultures, thousands of years before modern medicine. Even today, some medical-grade formulas are recognized in clinical wound care. Cosmetic extract may come from standard honey, Manuka honey, valued for its higher methylglyoxal content associated with stronger antibacterial activity, or royal jelly, another bee-derived material with a distinct nutrient profile.
How it works
How does it work?
Its high sugar concentration makes honey a natural humectant that attracts and retains moisture in the skin. Its natural hydrogen peroxide content and, in Manuka honey, methylglyoxal, give it genuine but mild antibacterial activity. It also contains enzymes and antioxidants that support its traditional reputation in wound care. Cosmetic honey extract in a finished product, however, is used at much lower concentrations than medical-grade wound honey.
Benefits
What does Honey Extract actually do for the skin?
- 01Hydrates through the natural humectant action of sugars
- 02Provides mild antibacterial support, more pronounced in Manuka honey
- 03Supports the skin's healing response to minor irritation
- 04Adds gentle soothing support backed by a long history of traditional use
- 05Generally well tolerated, but not vegan because it is bee-derived
Who is it for?
Is it right for your skin?
For combination and acne-prone skin that needs hydration with mild antibacterial support, as well as anyone who prefers traditional, minimally processed ingredients.
Notes and myths
What should you know before using it?
It is not vegan because it is a bee product. Cosmetic honey extract is much more diluted than medical-grade honey used in wound care, so any antibacterial effect should be considered supportive rather than a treatment for active infection.
