Green Tea Extract

Camellia Sinensis Leaf ExtractEGCG

A leaf extract rich in polyphenols, with antioxidant activity driven largely by EGCG, one of the most studied botanical compounds in skincare.

Definition

What is it?

Green tea extract comes from the unfermented leaves of Camellia sinensis, the same plant used to make black tea and oolong. The difference lies in processing: green tea leaves are steamed rather than oxidized, preserving a much higher concentration of catechins, a class of antioxidant polyphenols. The most studied is epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, responsible for much of the documented activity on skin.

How it works

How does it work?

EGCG and other catechins are potent free-radical scavengers. They limit oxidative damage from UV exposure and pollution before collagen and cellular DNA are affected. Research also shows anti-inflammatory activity and some evidence for regulating sebum production. For this reason, green tea is frequently used in formulas for oily and acne-prone skin in addition to its broader antioxidant role.

Notes and myths

What should you know before using it?
