Collagen

Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the human body and forms the framework that gives skin its tone and elasticity. Topical skincare cannot use collagen at its natural molecular size because the molecule is too large to penetrate the skin. Cosmetic formulas therefore use hydrolyzed collagen, broken down through hydrolysis into smaller peptide fragments that remain and act on the skin surface.

Hydrolyzed collagen works mainly on the surface as a humectant and film-forming ingredient. It retains moisture, smooths texture and temporarily softens the appearance of fine dehydration lines. It does not replace the skin's natural collagen fibers, but it can immediately improve the feel and appearance of the surface.

For dry, dehydrated skin or fine lines caused by lack of moisture when softness and an immediate plumping effect are desired.

Topical collagen is valued for hydration, protective film formation and its smoothing effect. To support the skin's natural collagen production, formulas may combine it with Vitamin C, retinoids, bakuchiol or signaling peptides.
