Arbutin

Arbutin is a naturally occurring compound found in bearberry, cranberry and blueberry leaves. It is chemically related to hydroquinone, a highly effective but more irritating pigmentation-lightening ingredient that is restricted in many countries. Alpha-arbutin, the synthetically stabilized form most often used in modern formulas, is more stable and generally considered gentler than beta-arbutin found in raw botanical extracts.

Arbutin inhibits tyrosinase, the same enzyme targeted by Vitamin C, but through a different binding mechanism. It is often described as releasing hydroquinone slowly and in a controlled way at the site of action, without exposing the skin all at once to hydroquinone's full irritation potential. This makes it one of the more targeted over-the-counter tyrosinase inhibitors.

For uneven tone, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sun-induced dark spots. It works best with consistent use alongside daily SPF, because new pigmentation from unprotected sun exposure can outpace what arbutin is able to fade.

Results require patience. Correcting pigmentation is a slow process with every ingredient in this category, including arbutin. Skipping sunscreen can significantly reduce results because UV exposure stimulates the very pigment production arbutin is intended to reduce.
