Antioxidant
Vitamin E
A fat-soluble antioxidant that works within the lipid layer and is often combined with vitamin C to extend its effectiveness.
Definition
What is it?
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin commonly used in cosmetics as tocopherol, the pure active form, or tocopheryl acetate, a more storage-stable ester that converts to active tocopherol in the skin. Unlike water-soluble vitamin C, vitamin E remains in the lipid layer and plays a complementary rather than repetitive role when the two are combined.
How it works
How does it work?
As a lipid-soluble antioxidant, vitamin E neutralizes free radicals within cell membranes and the lipid layer, areas where water-soluble antioxidants such as vitamin C do not act as efficiently. Research shows that vitamins C and E work synergistically. Vitamin C can regenerate spent vitamin E back into its active form, providing the biochemical basis for their frequent pairing.
Benefits
What does Vitamin E actually do for the skin?
- 01Adds antioxidant support within the lipid layer and complements water-soluble antioxidants such as vitamin C
- 02Helps stabilize and extend the effectiveness of vitamin C when formulated together
- 03Supports barrier lipids
- 04Softens the surface and reduces the feeling of dryness through emollient action
- 05Adds a mild softening and emollient effect
Who is it for?
Is it right for your skin?
For anyone building a layered antioxidant routine, especially alongside vitamin C, and for skin that benefits from additional lipid-layer support, including dry or barrier-stressed skin.
Notes and myths
What should you know before using it?
Pure tocopherol oxidizes relatively quickly after opening. Tocopheryl acetate is more stable in the finished product and therefore appears more often on ingredient lists, although tocopherol is the active form after conversion in the skin.
